"Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."
(Mat. 19:14)

History

In the year 1780 Robert Raikes a journalist assisted by Mrs. Kim started a movement in England among children who were left free on Sundays for their parents had to work even on Sundays. The unruly behaviour of those children prompted Raikes to do something to change them to a life of worthliving. So he and Mrs. Kim started to teach them read and write. This way they imparted biblical knowledge.Because this class was conducted on Sundays, it came to be known as Sunday School.Noting the impact of Sunday School on children ,it was rapidly copied in many parts of the world.

In India, Sunday School started in 1876 at Allahabad and later in Nilgiri (Conoor). In 1880, Arch Deacon Oommen Mammen started Sunday School in an orderly manner in Mallapally.

Today almost all churches in Kerala have Sunday School of their own pattern and syllabus. In Madhya Kerala Diocese, the Sunday School comes under "The Department of Christian Education" since 2003.
